If the alarming rise of addiction among iced coffee fans isn’t scary enough, imagine the thought of hundreds of angry Dunkin’ Donuts patriots after they learned that the annual “Free Iced Coffee Day” was canceled. What made matters worse was that a false Facebook event page promoting the annual holiday was put in place a week before the supposed date causing thousands of people to go to their local Dunkin’ Donuts demanding free coffee. Luckily, there was no rioting from the unruly crowds. The false event page promoted the event nationwide, although it had been scaled down to 5 regions this year, and was pulled by Facebook later that day after Dunkin’ Donuts expressed their concerns. The following afternoon Dunkin’ spent time apologizing to customers both publicly and privately to angry Facebook and Twitter messages and posts from fans.
One fan wrote, "I Love your coffee however this is a loop hole excuse in false advertisement. ... It's just sad that good paying everyday customers looked forward to this ...." To which Dunkin’ replied: "We're sorry for any confusion or misinformation that is out there. Any Facebook event page out there was inaccurate, wasn't set up by us and has been pulled down by Facebook."
Starting today Dunkin’ Donuts will implement a promotional plan involving the Boston Bruins. Street teams will be giving away 120 playoff tickets to people seen on the streets of Boston drinking an iced coffee. A great plan because as we all know hockey fans obviously need more caffeine.
